When your driver’s license suspension comes a Certificate of Financial Responsibility. If your driver’s license has been suspended, your state Department of Motor Vehicles may require you to obtain an SR22 document, also known as a Certificate of Financial Responsibility. An SR22 verifies the purchase of vehicle insurance coverage required by the state for reinstatement of driving privileges. The SR22 is a form we file on your behalf when you enroll in high risk auto insurance.
Why an SR22 May Be Required
The requirement to have an SR-22 is usually associated with:
- DUIs, DWIs
- A serious moving violation or multiples
- License suspension or revocation
- Multiple traffic offenses
- Failure to maintain the mandatory insurance coverage required in your state
If you are required to get an SR22, the court where you appeared, or the Department of Motor Vehicles will notify you by mail. As a part of your high risk auto coverage financial obligations, a nominal fee is charged for providing an SR22 certificate to the state on your behalf.
What is an SR22?
An SR22 certification is a form that is filed with the state by your insurance company. Although people often refer to it as such, it is not a type of insurance. An SR22 certificate of financial responsibility verifies that the named individual is carrying at least the state-mandated amount of car insurance with the state. By filing this document, it is guaranteeing that you are maintaining coverage the state of Wisconsin requires and are financially responsible for any accidents. We are also required to inform the state know if you do not.
SR22 Terms
The terms and requirements for high risk insurance vary by state, but in general, you must retain both the SR22 and your insurance policy for approximately three years. If your insurance policy lapses, your insurer is required by law to notify the state of Wisconsin DMV. The state will revoke your driver’s license at that time until your insurance has been reinstated. Once you have met your SR22 obligations for the prescribed amount of time, you will go back to lower insurance premiums and a wider variety of auto insurance coverage options available to you.

About Monona, WI
Monona was first a part of the town of Blooming Grove until it was officially incorporated in 1938. Early on before it was developed it consisted mostly farmland and vacation homes for those in Madison. Prior to its incorporation, the city was home to the Tonyawatha Springs Hotel. This grand hotel was enjoyed by Madisonians by taking a steam ferry across the lake for 20 cents to enjoy the weekend. The hotel was built in 1879 but sadly it was destroyed in 1895 by a fire.
The city saw its largest growth in the 50’s and 60’s. The city built a community center and swimming pool for the residents and in 1969 it went from being a village to a full-blown city. A City Hall was established, and it still houses the police and fire departments today.
The city of Monona, Wisconsin is landlocked on all sides by Lake Monona or the City of Madison. Because of this land is at a premium in Monona, especially on the water. Known for its small-town feel, Monona has an elementary school as well as a high school. Students are bussed to the middle school in Cottage Grove. Smaller classroom sizes and committed teachers and parents make these schools excellent and they rank highly in academics every year.
Perhaps one of the best things about Monona is the access to the lake. If you enjoy boating, Lake Monona boasts numerous boat launches. A total of twenty-six parks, including the flagship park called Dream Park, are scattered throughout the city. Recent improvements to many of the parks have given the city a sense of renewed pride. With a world class library, skatepark and public pool in the city center, the summer months are a joy for residents looking for activities closer to home. In the Winter months, the shelter at Winnequah park offers ice skating and snow shoeing on the lagoon. And don’t forget the warming house with refreshments. It’s not unusual to see residents on the lake playing pickup hockey on the lakes as well.
Monona is ripe for development and there are plans to reinvent the waterfront area located on the Yahara river. New restaurants continue to arrive on the scene with the recent addition of Off Broadway Drafthouse, Waypoint, and Breakwater. Don’t miss all that Monona has to offer. Ask one of our helpful agents if you have questions about the area.

Often you will need to work exclusively with a company that specializes in high risk car insurance. If your current insurance company doesn’t file the form, or you’re uninsured, you’ll have to shop for a new policy. Why is an SR22 required?
Many think the need for an SR22 is for drivers who have a DUI on their record. If this is the case for you, we specialize in drivers with this on their record and can help make the process quick and painless for you. The SR22 can be required for a variety of reasons, depending on where you live.
An SR-22 requirement is often required for the following:
- DUI or DWI or other major alcohol violation convictions
- Several traffic offenses, especially over a short time period
- A requirement for you to obtain a hardship or probationary license
- Being involved in an accident while driving without insurance
- Serious moving violation conviction, such as reckless or negligent driving
- Being caught for not carrying car insurance on your registered vehicle
- A requirement to reinstate your driver’s license after a suspension or revocation
- Driving without insurance conviction
If you get an SR22 you can get your license and/or registration reinstated and thus get back on the road. You’ll know it’s required if you are informed by the court or state. The notification should inform you why an SR22 is required, the insurance requirements, and how long the form must remain on file with the state of Wisconsin.
How long is an SR22 required?
The good news in all of this is that the SR22 isn’t required forever, just one to five years. In the state of Wisconsin specifically, the SR22 is required for a total of three years. The length it is required varies by state, and in some states, it can vary depending upon the offense. Most commonly the SR22 is required for three years. When your time period actually starts also varies by state. It can begin with the offense date, conviction date, suspension date or the date when you reinstated your license. For all of these details we can get all of your questions answered in a short phone call.
You need to be certain you know how long the SR22 is required because if you cancel your car insurance policy before that time is up, we are required to inform the state and you’ll be penalized. Your license and/or registration may be suspended or revoked, and the time period could reset again on how long the SR22 must be maintained. We are sure to inform our customers of how long their SR22 is required so all of this can be avoided.
Another bit of good news is the offense that resulted in the SR22 being required, and that ultimately caused the increase in your rates, won’t haunt you forever. When you keep your driving record clean, your car insurance rates will go down as well with time.
SR22: What if you move?
Not every state uses an SR22 certificate of financial responsibility. If you move to one of these states an SR22 is not required.
- New Mexico
- Pennsylvania
- New York
- Kentucky
- Minnesota
- North Carolina
- Delaware
- Oklahoma
Of the states that don’t require an SR22, each has its own version of the form and insurance requirements, so it is best to check with your new insurance provider when you move. If you have an SR22 in one state and move to another state, usually you’ll still be required to meet the requirements of the state where the offense was committed. That means you’ll need to look for an out-of-state SR22 filing. We can help point you in the right direction if you end up leaving the area.
